Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Erect, unbranched or occasionally sparsely branched, monocarpic or polycarpic rosette shrubs 1–5 m tall.

Leaves: Leaves simple. Whorled. Blades linear Apex acute. Base sheathing. Margins ciliate or entire.

Flowers:

Fruit: Fruit a simple; dry achene (cypsela); black or gray in color; linear; surface with ascending silky hairs (sericeous); with a pappus.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Occurring on dry ridges or in open sites in dry to mesic forest; ca. 425–1;100 m

Elevation Range: 425–1100 m
